Unacceptable River Etiquette from a Commercial Crew
As a private boater with over a decade of professional river guiding experience, I was extremely disappointed by the conduct of this company’s crew on July 17 on the Kootenay River.
Our family group arrived at approximately 1:30 p.m. and fully established camp on a first-come, first-served public beach. Just after 4:00 p.m., this commercial trip arrived and began unloading boats without first speaking with us or asking whether we were willing to share the site.
When I asked if they intended to camp there, I was told they had “tenure” to the beach and that it had been a long day. I explained that we were already established, pointed out the location of our privacy toilet (groover), and asked that they leave it an appropriate amount of space. Despite that conversation, they proceeded to establish their kitchen roughly 70 feet from our groover, directly within its line of sight.
I’ve been a professional river guide for longer than many guides have been alive. One of the basic principles of river etiquette is respecting an established campsite. If your intended campsite is occupied, you move on to your backup option. Professional commercial crews should always have Plan B, Plan C, and Plan D. There were multiple suitable campsites within a short distance downstream, yet this crew chose to occupy an already established family campsite instead.
What should have been a relaxing family rafting trip became an uncomfortable experience, and we ended up relocating tents and adjusting our camp layout to preserve some privacy.
I expect far better professionalism, planning, and respect for other river users from a commercial outfitter.

Absolutely perfect afternoon well spent on the scenic Bow River. Staff were efficient with time and took care of passengers and equipment seamlessly. Tristan and Vincent were absolutely too notch. Perfect addition to our time in Canmore.

(Translated by Google) Nice trip on the Bow River from Canmore. Good guide, took plenty of time to explain things and answer questions. We were lucky with the weather, little wind and lovely sunshine. Nice to see the city from a different perspective and learn a bit about its origins. Great company with good staff.

We recently went on a river float with Canmore Raft tours whilst exploring the area and we have to say this was one of the highlights of our trip. Our guide was so knowledgeable and interesting with amazing information about the area. By floating you have no noise and are able to appreciate the wonderful sounds of nature and it gives you a beautiful perspective of the land as well. Highly recommend doing a float of you are in the Canmore or Banff area
